Background

The Data to Action: Stronger Pandemic Preparedness and Response Systems in the Western Pacific Region project is a landmark regional health security investment supported by the Pandemic Fund. The initiative reflects a strong commitment by participating governments to address shared pandemic risks through collective action, regional solidarity and the One Health approach that connects human, animal and environmental health.

The project brings together 12 Asia-Pacific countries: the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Naoero, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Viet Nam.

The Asian Development Bank serves as the lead Implementing Entity for the project, working alongside the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as co-Implementing Entities, with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a key delivery partner supporting technical implementation for public health components across participating countries.

Anchored in the Asia Pacific Health Security Action Framework (APHSAF), the project aims to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response capacities through investments in multisource surveillance systems, laboratory networks and workforce development while promoting collaboration across human, animal and environmental health sectors. Countries lead project development through a multisectoral process involving governments, technical institutions, civil society organizations, development partners and implementing entities.

This virtual side event at the seventy-seventh session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific (RCM77) will formally introduce the project, recognize the leadership and commitment of participating Member States and partners, showcase the value of regional cooperation and the One Health approach, and raise the visibility of Pandemic Fund investments in the Western Pacific Region.
