14 November is World Diabetes Day
Diabetes programme
The Diabetes programme, named The WHO Global Diabetes Compact, has the vision of reducing the risk of diabetes, and ensuring that all people who are diagnosed with diabetes have access to equitable, comprehensive, affordable and quality treatment and care.
Coverage targets
There are 5 global coverage targets for diabetes to be achieved by 2030:
- 80% of people with diabetes are diagnosed;
- 80% of people with diagnosed diabetes have good control of glycaemia;
- 80% of people with diagnosed diabetes have good control of blood pressure;
- 60% of people with diabetes of 40 years or older receive statins; and
- 100% of people with type 1 diabetes have access to affordable insulin and blood glucose self-monitoring.
Workstreams
The Global Diabetes Compact works through 6 workstreams to advance the diabetes agenda and accelerate progress towards the global coverage targets:
- access to essential diabetes medicines and associated health technologies;
- technical products;
- prevention, health promotion and health literacy;
- country support;
- research and innovation; and
- governance, strategy and partnerships.
